Effects such as increased vigour, increased muscle strength, enhanced memory, sharpened concentration, a boost in libido and increased energy levels can make this drug seem like the miracle anti-aging therapy. However, it is unclear whether or not this therapy can offer any health benefits to men who simply have a normal age-related decline in testosterone. Few large studies have examined the effects of this therapy in men who have a healthy testosterone level and the few smaller studies that have been conducted reveal conflicting results. In recent years, researchers (and pharmaceutical companies) have focused on the effects of testosterone deficiency, especially among men. In fact, as men age, testosterone levels drop very gradually, about 1% to 2% each year — unlike the relatively rapid drop in estrogen that causes menopause.

The surprising answer here is that testosterone is both the primary male sex hormone and a steroid. Specifically, testosterone is classified as an anabolic-androgenic steroid. “Anabolic” refers to its role in muscle building, while “androgenic” relates to male sex characteristics. While most studies on testosterone and body composition have focused on men, particularly in populations with spinal cord injury (SCI), some emerging evidence supports similar benefits in women. Moreover, there are gender-specific risks and side effects when it comes to using steroids to increase testosterone levels. In males, the potential risks include testicular atrophy, decreased sperm production, and male pattern baldness. Females, on the other hand, may experience masculinizing effects such as facial and body hair growth, deepening of the voice, and disruption of the menstrual cycle.
